19 February 2007 Poor snow could 'tempt skiers off-piste'
Britons heading abroad on skiing holidays may be tempted to go off-piste in search for better conditions following widespread reports of patchy snow at many resorts, it has been claimed.
Holidaymakers tempted to head off-piste have been warned by American Express that without adequate insurance, they may be liable for the cost of repatriation and medical bills in the event of an accident.
The company reports that in excess of 50,000 snowboarders and skiers are rescued every year from the French Alps.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Travel Insurance, said: "Patchy conditions have been a problem in Europe this season and could tempt holidaymakers to flout the rules."
She advised winter sports enthusiasts to conduct themselves wisely on the slopes and to purchase sufficient travel insurance before going overseas.
Financial services comparison firm moneysupermarket.com recently reported that skiers and snowboarders spend an average of four hours a day on the snow.
