29 February 2008 Power sharing agreement reached
An agreement to share power has been signed by the president and opposition leader in Kenya.
Mwai Kibaki - the president of the country - and Raila Odinga, the opposition leader, signed the agreement which has brought an end to the post-election crisis in the country.
Violence broke out following the election in December, after claims arose that the vote count was flawed.
But negotiations between both sides have drawn to a close, with a new agreement for power sharing having been reached.
Adam Mynott from the BBC said that both sides have moved from their original position in order to reach the settlement.
Kofi Annan, the ex-secretary general of the United Nations, was involved in the talks and helped to broker the deal.
"Today we have reached an important staging post but the journey is far from over," the Bloomberg news agency reports that Mr Annan said. He added that the "real" challenge lay in working together to reconcile the nation.
