21 June 2005 Quarter of tourists fall ill on holiday
A survey carried out by online pharmacy Allcures.com, in conjunction with Malaria Awareness Week.
The research discovered that of the 527 people questioned, one in four had experienced health problems while on holiday, and as a result had to go to a doctor or pharmacist, reports thisistravel.co.uk.
Some 34 per cent of those claimed the experience was a bad one, while 19 per cent said it spoilt their time away.
Even more worryingly, the research found that 80 per cent of Brits going abroad were unsure whether or not their destination was a malaria hotspot, meaning they did not take any kind of precautionary measures beforehand.
Mike Ritson from Allcures said: "It's important that people do their research and seek proper advice from their pharmacist before they travel. It's easy to get caught out when you're in an unfamiliar place, but there are simple and inexpensive precautions that people can take to minimise the risks before they travel, without spoiling their holiday."
