17 December 2007 Record level of tourists travelling to Tibet
A record number of tourists will have travelled to Tibet by the end of 2007, it has been reported.
Chinese state press reveals that more than four million holidaymakers will have visited the Himalayan region by the end of the year.
According to officials, this is an increase of 64 per cent year-on-year.
Tibet Communist Party member Zhang Qingli is reported as saying that Tibet is in a "golden era" of tourism.
Officials have put the increase in tourism down to improved transport links and a high-speed high-altitude rail service to China.
However, exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has criticised the rail link, which he argues has led to an increase in the number of Chinese migrants who are pushing Tibetans out of business and their homes.
