29 August 2007 Regional hubs routes 'boost convenience' for holidaymakers
New routes offered by regional airports has made flying abroad more convenient for UK passengers, it has been claimed.
The Airport Operators Association (AOA) reports a large increase in the number of travellers opting to fly from regional hubs, rather than airports in larger cities - especially London.
An AOA spokesman said: " The increase in routes being offered from smaller airports [are] of course more convenient to people - if they can fly from their local airport, they will."
He added that the five per cent drop in market share for Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted to 53 per cent is not a reflection on problems with these airports, but instead a result of the new routes being offered by local providers.
In May 2006, Halifax reported that the growth of regional airports has been driven by the success of low-cost airlines offering trips to the continent for independent travellers.
