03 May 2006 Relaxed law lead to tourist drug fears
Tourists travelling to Mexico should be aware of forthcoming changes to the country's drug laws which are currently raising concerns.
The bill, which is set to decriminalise drugs, although it has not yet been signed by the Mexican president, Vincente Fox, is causing some alarm amongst tourism officials who fear it will be exploited by those looking to get around strict US law, Travel Mole reports.
Although the new law allows consumers to purchase certain amounts of drugs, the bill instigates much harsher penalties for drug traffickers, so tourists confused about what is and isn't acceptable, could find themselves in difficult situations if they choose to get involved with drugs.
Ana Maria Salazar, a former Pentagon anti-drug official stated: "All of those who think this legalizes drugs in Mexico….not only are they wrong, but they are going to get in a lot of trouble if they come here and try to use drugs."
Mexico which is located in Central America, bordering with the United States to the north and Guatemala and Belize to the south, and has coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico with terrain ranging from northern desert to rainforests in the south.
