30 April 2007 Renewed call for airline prices clarity
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has restated its demand that travel companies and airlines include the cost of fuel supplements and other non-optional expenses in the advertised headline price of holidays.
Following discussions with the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), Abta has agreed that it will use its code of conduct to ensure that members advertise clear prices to holidaymakers, though it has warned that the association does not control the advertising of non-members and airlines.
Mark Tanser, chief executive of Abta, said: "If the whole industry included all non-optional costs in headline prices, it would save consumers time and raise the industry's credibility."
He added that the OFT must enforce this ruling with airlines and non-Abta travel agencies to guarantee a fair market for all.
Last week, British Airways announced that it would be increasing its fuel surcharge on long-haul flights as of May 2nd 2007 as a result of a recent increase in oil prices.
