17 April 2007 Rise in holidaymakers to the south of France
Increasing numbers of holidaymakers are travelling by train through the Channel Tunnel to cities in the south of France, it has been reported.
Eurostar has published its figures for the first quarter of the financial year, reporting a 13.2 per cent increase in sales to £142 million.
The company attributes this rise to a 14.5 per cent increase in the number of business travellers, in addition to a rise in the number of holidaymakers purchasing combination tickets including TGV journeys to cities including Montpellier and Nice.
Richard Brown, chief executive of the firm, said: "I am genuinely surprised and pleased at the big rises in both business travel and connecting leisure journeys to the south of France."
He added that these figures provided evidence to the claim that Britons are electing to use more environmentally friendly means of transportation when travelling abroad.
In February 2007, Halifax predicted that the effects of global warming could result in European ski slopes lacking sufficient snow in the coming decades.
