16 March 2007 Roaming fees 'to drop by 70 per cent'
British holidaymakers in Europe wanting to ring home from the continent could benefit from a 70 per cent reduction in mobile phone "roaming" fees if proposed EU legislation is passed.
An "agreement in principle" has been signed by telecoms ministers, which could result in the cost of ringing the UK from other EU countries being capped at 30 pence per minute, SimplySwitch reports.
Karen Darby, chief executive officer of the price comparison firm, said: "Mobile phone users have long suffered from rip-off prices when making or receiving calls overseas."
She added that if these plans were introduced by July as suggested, it would provide proof that the EU was willing and able to act on behalf of consumer interests.
Last year, research from Halifax revealed that mobile phones are the sixth most likely item to be stolen while abroad, with 1.5 million stolen in the past five years.
