17 June 2005 Severe flooding hits Taiwan
Floods have caused havoc in Taiwan, claiming the lives of eight people in the southern region of the country.
The government's disaster relief centre has said that a 73 year-old man and a nine year-old boy were amongst the eight fatalities.
The torrential rain, which started on Saturday and has caused severe flooding and landslides, is now spreading to central regions of Taiwan.
According to Taiwan news, the counties of Jiavi, Yunlin and Miaoli, all low-lying areas, are now at risk of flooding.
As a result, some 2,000 locals have been evacuated from the area by the disaster response centre due to their homes being under threat.
The bad news was compounded by the Central Weather Bureau, which predicts further torrential rainfall for other parts of the island, stretching towards the west and north-east.
Officials informed Reuters that damage totalling £20.3 million has occurred to crops.
