16 August 2005 Shopaholics need travel insurance
British women spend so much money shopping on their holidays, that nearly half of them admit to needing an extra bag to bring it all home, according to new research.
The study, carried out by Barclays General Insurance, reveals that of all holidaymakers, 23 per cent bought another bag while away to bring their shopping back.
Meanwhile, 20 per cent planned ahead and packed a spare bag to fill with shopping.
But all these new goodies means that travellers risk being under insured for their possessions in case luggage is lost or stolen.
Adrian Grace, managing director of Barclays Insurance, said: "Holidaymakers need to understand that they should have comprehensive and up-to-date travel insurance to cover their pre and post-shopping luggage and remember, keep receipts of any spending in case you need to claim."
The average cost of a suitcase and its contents is £1,307 for a woman and £1,004 for a man, but on returning from holiday, this increases by an average of £170.
The research revealed that holidaymakers were choosing destinations on the strength of the shopping there, with British shoppers spending at least £285million in Paris, £275million in New York and £250million in Dublin.
