21 July 2006 Singapore targets Islamic tourists
A new travel guide to Singapore designed specifically for Muslim travellers has been launched.
Created by the Singapore Tourism Board in order to attract more visitors to the tiny south-east Asian island nation, the guide covers all the essential areas for visitors, with advice on shopping, cultural activities and annual events, AME Info reports.
The guide also features tourist advice targeted specifically at Muslims, including a list of restaurants and places to eat which have been certified by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore.
Alan Tan, Area Director, Middle East and Africa, Singapore Tourism Board, stated: "Feedback from our large network of travel agents in the region has shown that there is a real demand for information about Singapore, so we decided to launch a bespoke guide especially for Muslim visitors."
Singapore, which has a diverse cultural community with four official languages, has a long history of welcoming Muslim travellers.
The island also has an Islamic community which makes up 15 per cent of the population and one of the oldest ethnic Arab enclaves in south-east Asia.
