03 December 2007 Ski holiday costs slide on weak dollar
Holidaymakers may be tempted to head to the US as new report shows the cost of ski holidays Stateside has slid downhill as a result of the weak dollar, but they may do better to head to eastern Europe for the best bargains of all.
Research from Post Office Travel Services found the cheapest skiing destination to be Borovets in Bulgaria, where ski equipment and accommodation is half that of Vail in Colorado, while destinations in Solvenia and Romania charge budget prices compared to their equivalents in the Alps.
Helen Warburton, head of travel services at Post Office, said: "For those people and for bargain hunters, Bulgaria and Romania represent excellent value."
She added that price shouldn't be the only consideration when picking a ski holiday resort, noting that experienced skiers may opt for sites with the top resort facilities and trickiest slopes.
Last month, Tim Carter, SnowSports manager at the SnowDome, advised holidaymakers planning on a ski trip to make sure their muscles are ready for the action on the pistes to avoid injury.
