14 February 2007 Ski travel insurance costs 'may rise' by 2030
The impact of global warming may lead to an increase in ski travel insurance costs by 2030, according to Halifax.
As temperatures increase, the firm suggests that thinner snow coverings could pose greater risks to winter sports enthusiasts, driving ski travel insurance prices upwards.
David Rochester, head of pricing at Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "British winter sports enthusiasts face an uncertain future if global temperatures continue to rise."
"Contemporary travel insurance pricing models for winter sports holidays will have to be revised as the risk to participants increases," he added.
The claims follow research conducted on behalf of the company which predicts that the number of resorts with adequate snow covering for skiing could diminish by 40 per cent by 2030.
Meanwhile, it suggests that later snowfalls could delay the start of the skiing season as temperatures rise.
