16 November 2007 Snowstorm allows Whistler early opening
Skiers looking to head to North America for a winter sports holiday will be thrilled to hear that part of the Canadian resort of Whistler Blackcomb is to open ahead of schedule.
The resort has been caught up in a snow storm, meaning Whistler mountain can open a week early, with Blackcomb mountain to open as scheduled on November 22nd.
"Natural snowfall and our snowmaking efforts have allowed for the early opening on Whistler Mountain that skiers and riders have been hoping for," said Doug MacFarlane, Whistler Blackcomb mountain manager.
The base of the mountain currently has a snow depth of 108cm, with 80cm added to the mountain by the storm alone.
Whistler's early opening will be music to the ears of winter sports enthusiasts and accompanies recent news from European resorts - most notably in Austria - that they too will open ahead of schedule thanks to heavy snowfall.
Earlier this week, Mr MacFarlane said that Whistler Blackcomb was infected with a feeling of "giddy anticipation" ahead of the resort's opening.
