27 February 2008 South-west England reinvents itself as a "cultural hotbed"
The south-west region of England has reinvented itself as a "cultural hotbed" and at the same time dispelled its "country-bumpkin" image, it has been claimed.
According to Lonely Planet's new publication, Devon, Cornwall & Southwest England, Devon, Cornwall and other regions in the south-west are no longer the preserve of caravans, surfers and older holidaymakers, instead attracting a diverse crowd.
"The south-west [is] in flux. Regeneration is happening everywhere you look: futuristic greenhouses are springing up in abandoned clay pits, run-down docksides are being rejuvenated and designer bistros are setting up shop all along the coastline," coordinating author Oliver Berry commented.
It is also noted that the area is fast gaining a reputation as an "eco-haven" whilst also acting as a creative trendsetter and a top destination for those with an interest in cooking.
Devon is a county in south-west England that borders Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset.
It has two separated coastlines on the English Channel and the Bristol Channel.
