15 August 2007 Spain and France are 'holiday theft hotspots'
Britons heading to popular European holiday destinations this summer have been advised to take care of their possessions while away, amid reports of pickpocketing and other types of theft on the continent.
Research from swiftcover.com reveals that 14 per cent of Britons have been victims of theft while in Europe, with Spain and France leading the listings with 37 per cent and 19 per cent of holidaymakers respectively reporting crime being in those countries.
Craig Staniland, director of underwriting at the firm, said: "For years Spain and France have been the top holiday destinations for Brits, but unfortunately they are also the top holiday theft hotspots."
He added that holidaymakers should make sure their belongings are not visible in their car or hotel room, to use the hotel safe for any valuables and to always have adequate travel insurance to cover any loss.
Last October, Axa reported that 12.2 million Britons had plans to visit Spain, the Balearic or Canary Islands.
