24 January 2008 Spain and France 'most popular for holidays'
France and Spain were the most destinations for Britons taking holidays in 2006, it has been revealed.
According to newly-released statistics compiled from an International Passenger Survey called Travel Trends, holidays accounted for two-thirds of all overseas travel during this period.
Meanwhile, the average duration of stay in 2006 was ten nights, while 49 per cent of breaks taken abroad lasted for between four and 13 nights.
"The Irish Republic, France, Spain and Poland were the top four countries visited for the purpose of visiting friends or relatives. For business trips the most visited countries were France, Germany, USA and Irish Republic," the study revealed.
However, holiday destinations that were most popular were Spain and France while other top holiday spots included Italy, the USA, Greece, the Irish Republic, Portugal, Turkey, Netherlands and Cyprus.
It was recently revealed that tourism arrivals in Spain were up in 2007.
