24 August 2006 Stansted strike averted
Travellers planning to fly from Stansted this weekend look set to have a much more relaxing bank holiday after a planned strike of baggage handlers and check-in staff was called off yesterday.
After negotiations with trade unions, Swissport have offered their employees at the airport a pay rise of 11 per cent over two years.
Gary Pearce, an organiser at GMB, who had arranged the strike alongside the Transport and General Worker's Union, has endorsed the decision.
"GMB is recommending that our members accept the new pay offer which came out of three days of hard negotiations."
"Swissport have done the right thing in making this offer and I think GMB members will recognise that."
In the past, the Association of British Insurers has informed the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) that travel insurance may cover delays due to industrial action, but that terms and conditions should always be checked.
When outbound flights of a package holiday are rearranged, ABTA informs customers that they are entitled to an alternative holiday or a full refund, which can sometimes be claimed from their travel insurance company.
