25 February 2008 Step forward in green travel
Green air travel took a step forward this weekend as Virgin Atlantic successfully tested its biofuel demonstration flight.
On Sunday February 24th, Virgin Atlantic confirmed that its biofuel demonstration flight took place as its Boeing 747-400 took off from Heathrow Airport.
The biofuel-powered aircraft departed the hub at 11.34 and landed at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 12.14.
"Today marks a biofuel breakthrough for the whole airline industry. Virgin Atlantic, and its partners, are proving that you can find an alternative to traditional jet fuel and fly a plane on new technology, such as sustainable biofuel," commented Sir Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic.
He added that the "pioneering" flight would enable those serious about reducing their carbon emissions to continue developing the "fuels of the future" such as sustainable next-generation oils like algae.
Green travel is of increasing interest to holidaymakers, who sometimes opt for holidays in the UK or short-haul flights and train travel to help reduce their impact on the environment when travelling.
