22 December 2005 Strike brings New York to a standstill
Residents and tourists in New York have been left stranded as transport workers went on strike for the second day running.
Coming in the middle of the busy Christmas shopping season, the strike has forced people to find alternative means of getting about the city or to abandon plans completely.
Members of the Transport Workers' Union (TWU) are hoping to gain pay increases, improved health plans and a stronger pension fund.
However, city officials have criticised the strikers and TWU is being fined $1 million a day after a state supreme court judge ruled the strike to be illegal.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the economic consequences of the strike range "from severe to devastating, depending on the business" and that there could be no winners in the current situation.
The strike, which is the first in New York for 25 years, left commuters struggling to get to work this morning in temperatures of minus five degrees; the seven million people who usually use the transport system used a combination of taxis, hitchhiking, bicycles and walking to get to their destinations.
