11 June 2007 Students 'should be vigilant when abroad'
Students heading abroad before they go to university have been urged to be vigilant with their personal possessions when overseas.
Direct Line notes that while some possessions may be covered by parental home insurance, young Britons are taking increasingly expensive property abroad with them and should ensure they have sufficient travel insurance to protect these items.
Carmel McCarthy, a spokesperson for the firm, said: "It's important not to become complacent on holiday because we wouldn't be complacent if walking round London.
"We wouldn't leave our items for everyone to see."
She added that travellers should take the necessary security measures to protect their high-value property, such as video cameras, while advising Britons to keep their cash separate from their other belongings in case of emergency or theft.
Last September, Halifax advised students to avoid "gimmicks" when selecting a current account and instead focus on a student account with a high interest-free overdraft limit.
