01 March 2007 Switzerland, Austria and Germany lead tourism report
The World Economic Forum has reported that Switzerland, Austria and Germany have topped its first ever Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report.
Aiming to analyse the most attractive environments for the development of travel and tourism worldwide, the report ranked countries according to 13 criteria.
These factors included safety and security, air transport infrastructure, tourism infrastructure and price competitiveness, among others.
Jennifer Blanke, senior economist of the global competitiveness network at the World Economic Forum, said: "The top rankings of Switzerland, Austria and Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore demonstrate the importance of supportive business and regulatory frameworks, coupled with world-class transport and tourism infrastructure."
She added that the report also highlighted the importance of the focus on both natural and human resources in forging an environment conducive to developing travel and tourism.
Last week, Halifax revealed that the purchase power of Britons on holiday in Switzerland has increased by 23 per cent since 1996, advising travellers to take into account the cost of purchases made abroad when deciding on a holiday destination.
