28 September 2007 Terminal 5 'to open in March'
The newest airport terminal in Heathrow has been given an opening date of March 2008, it has been announced.
According to BAA, the exact date is in six months time on March 27th, when the complex will become the biggest free-standing building in the UK.
Noting that Heathrow is currently over-subscribed - 68 million passengers are this year expected to pass through a terminal with facilities designed for 45 million people. However, upon completion, Terminal 5 will take on 30 million passengers allowing time for redevelopment of the rest of the airport.
"By 2012, we could have effectively created a new airport for London, with the majority of our passengers travelling through facilities that are not operational today," commented Stephen Nelson, chief executive officer of BAA.
New features of the terminal will include an advanced technology aTix automated check-in system which could help to reduce queuing and speed-up check-in.
