01 April 2006 Thai celebration in Sydney
Pack your bags for Australia this April and you'll get to sample a taste of Thailand too, as Sydney gets ready for the Thailand Grand Festival 2006.
Planned for April 9th, the festival, which will take place in Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour, is being held in honour of His Majesty King Bhumiphol Adulyadej of Thailand to celebrate the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne.
According to travel website Travel Mole, the free all-day event, which is being organised by the local Thai community along with the Thai government offices, will host a range of cultural activities for tourists, including Thai cooking demonstrations and fruit and vegetable carving alongside an exhibition of work by the King himself.
Buddhist monks will also perform a chanting ceremony in celebration of the New Year and there will be classical Thai dancing, music and Thai boxing demonstrations throughout the day, along with a Thai silk fashion show on the main stage.
In Thailand there is a calendar of grand events running throughout 2006 organised to honor the king who, having served 60 years on the throne, is the country's longest reigning monarch.
