22 June 2006 Think before you book
While all sensible travellers would be advised to take out a comprehensive insurance policy before heading to their holiday destination, holidaymakers should remember not everything will be covered.
For example, what if something goes wrong with the holiday package or hotel?
A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers, Malcolm Tarling, said: "[Travel insurance] covers medical treatment, loss of baggage, delay or cancellation and personal liability, but does not pay out if your holiday brochure turns out to have been misleading."
Reporting in the Guardian, Marianne Curphey recommends that holidaymakers need to do some research before making a booking but ultimately if they are misled their tour operator could be held responsible.
Spokeswoman for the Association of British Travel Agents, Frances Tuke, recommends initially trying to resolve any immediate problems at the resort and to follow that up with a written complaint if necessary.
Meanwhile underwriting manager at Halifax travel, Paul Birkhead, commented: "The best piece of advice we can offer prospective holidaymakers is to really do their research before choosing their holiday destination."
