Before taking off this summer, holidaymakers are being advised to think seriously about taking out adequate travel protection.
According the New York Daily News, although the number of travellers taking out travel cover policies is on the rise, as holidaymakers head out on tours and overseas trips, but as many as two thirds are still going without.
With increasing benefits being added to policies, including recompense against an airline going out of business and acts of terrorism, one of the most common reasons for taking out insurance is still to protect against unforeseen circumstances which cause a trip to be cancelled or cut short, according to the Daily News.
President and chief executive of the American Society of Travel Agents, Kathryn Sudeikis, commented: "Nothing's worse than having the whole thing called off and on top of that you can't get your money back, it's like adding salt to the wound."
The scale of your trip and the risk factors involved also have to be taken into account when choosing your policy, with emergency medical treatment and evacuation cover, which could otherwise cost thousands, being necessities on certain more adventurous holidays.
In Britain the Department of Health strongly advises UK travellers to take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance, especially if travelling to the USA.
