25 September 2007 Tourism training to help promote Jamaica
A tourism training school looks set to be opened by Jamaican officials in a bid to attract visitors to the island, it has been reported.
According to the Associated Press, the Caribbean island saw a 12 per cent decrease in visitors from the US - the main source of its tourism.
Meanwhile, the publication claims that the Caribbean Tourism Organisation believes other Caribbean islands are suffering similar declines in US tourism.
As a result, the training school will form a key part of the country's bid to reverse this trend.
Nonetheless, according to Jamaica Information Service, the country's national air carrier, Air Jamaica, has been commended by Counterpart International for "furthering the cause of using sustainable tourism to enhance and improve the health, wealth, culture and environment of the communities it serves".
Air Jamaica was given the World Tourism Forum Award for Peace and Sustainable Tourism at Counterpart International's 2007 World Leadership Awards in New York last week.
