26 April 2006 Tourist taster of colonial history
Tourist travelling to Sri Lanka will be able to head for the hills and sleep in luxury, thanks to the refurbishment of a group of colonial tea plantation bungalows.
The former-plantation manager's accommodation, which is on the Norwood plantation in the Ceylon tea growing hills, four hours from the nation's capital, Colombo, has been converted into a boutique hotel for those wishing to sample a taste of the colonial life, CNN reports.
Asela Wavita, manager for Tea Trails, a firm set up by Sri Lankan tea company Dilmah to manage the bungalows, commented: "We have had mostly British visitors.
"I guess it's the concept, the British colonial feeling, that appeals to them – they can experience what their ancestors enjoyed."
Guests can experience life on the plantation and learn about the history of the tea growing region while enjoying the luxury of the hotel surroundings.
Taking out the necessary cover is still an absolute necessity for a trip to Sri Lanka however as civil war continues in certain regions of the island.
