15 September 2006 Tourists flock to Africa
Holidaymakers from around the world are travelling to Africa in increasing numbers.
Figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) put the number of tourists going to the second largest continent at an estimated 800 million in 2005, an increase of 5.5 per cent on the previous year.
Francesco Frangialli, UNWTO Secretary General, told a conference supporting African tourism that the increase in numbers showed the importance of tourism to the economy there.
"Africa can have substantial comparative advantage with its wildlife, nature, heritage and climate," he said.
The release of these figures comes months after the UNWTO urged Africa to be more "proactive" in promoting itself to the rest of the world.
British citizens joining those heading to Africa will need to check the visa requirements for their destination country.
Some countries, such as Ethiopia and Ghana, require UK citizens to obtain a visa before entering the country while others, including South Africa and Malawi, do not.
