24 September 2007 Tourists 'flock to the land Down Under'
Being a land where women glow and men plunder, according to the patriotic Men at Work song, has not put visitors off heading to Australia, it has been revealed.
The North Queensland Register, reporting figures from Tourism Research Australia, notes that over the last 12 months, tourism in Australia has put AUS $2.5 billion into the Australian economy, helping the country deal with issues such as drought.
According to the research, tourists spent AUS $34 billion in regional Australia in during the 2006-07 period - an increase of eight per cent on the same period last year.
"Every dollar spent by tourists helps create local jobs, with tourism in regional Australia already creating more than 200,000 jobs," commented tourism minister Fran Bailey.
In 2006-07 two million international tourists stayed in Australia for a total of 35.7 million nights - 3.6 million extra nights compared to the year before.
