20 December 2005 Tourists undervalue possessions' worth
A lack of awareness of how much suitcases' contents are worth has led to vast numbers of people travelling without adequate travel insurance.
Research conducted by Legal & General found that over 50 per cent of people estimate their holiday possessions to total less than £500, while a further 23 per cent did not know how much their suitcases' contents were worth.
However, the insurer found that the average value of the luggage and contents for a family of four was well above people's estimated amount at £2,500.
"It is so important that holidaymakers check their insurance cover to make sure they have the cover they need, before they travel," commented Garry Skelton, marketing director at Legal & General Insurance.
"This could be insurance cover under a travel policy or personal possessions and travel cover under a home insurance policy," he added.
Mr Skelton also highlighted the fact that many people forget to take the value of the suitcase itself into consideration.
