16 April 2007 Travel agents' insurance 'a rip off'
Consumers have been warned that they may be paying over the odds if purchasing travel insurance through their travel agency.
Research from InsureandGo reveals that travel insurance purchased from travel agents is 15.5 per cent more expensive when compared with the average market price.
Perry Wilson, a director at the firm, commented that this evidence simply makes the case for regulation of the sale of travel insurance through travel agents by the Financial Services Authority.
"As if it isn't bad enough that travel agents are indulging in heavy-handed and misleading practices to sell their insurance products, now we find that they are massively overcharging customers too," he said.
Last year, Direct Line claimed that the sales practices of travel agents put holidaymakers at risk of purchasing inadequate or inappropriate cover for their trips.
The firm reported that 64 per cent of Britons purchasing travel insurance from travel agents had not had their policy clearly explained to them, resulting in 13 per cent being unaware of their level of cover.
