08 October 2005 Travel insurance advised as more Brits abroad
Visits abroad by UK residents rose by four per cent during the year to August 2005, new figures reveal.
Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that the number of Brits travelling abroad rose from 62.8 million to 65.6 million over the 12 months ending August this year.
During the year, visits to Western Europe rose one per cent to 49.6 million, to North America by ten per cent to five million, and to other parts of the world by 18 per cent to 11 million.
Over the 12 months to August 2005, visits by overseas residents to the UK rose by ten per cent, from 26.9 million to 29.7 million, though visits from residents of North America fell by one per cent to 4.3 million. Visits from residents of Western Europe rose over the year by ten per cent to 19.2 million and by 22 per cent from other parts of the world to 6.2 million.
Between June and August this year there were an estimated 7.5 million visits to the UK by overseas residents, a fall of two per cent on the previous quarter. Spending over the three months also fell by two per cent to £3.5 billion. During the quarter to August 2005 there were one per cent fewer visits overseas by UK residents, to 16.4 million, while spending fell by five per cent to £7.8 billion.
Brits travelling abroad are advised to ensure that they have adequate travel cover for their trip before leaving the UK.
