14 September 2005 Travel insurance can ease theft trauma
Petty theft abroad affects more than one in ten Brits on their travels, according to new research from Direct Line Travel Insurance.
The most commonly stolen items while overseas were found to be money (41 per cent), wallets or purses (34 per cent) and cameras (18 per cent).
The foreign destination with the highest number of thefts was Spain, with 38 per cent of Brits being on the wrong end of a crime there, followed by France (14 per cent) and Italy (seven per cent).
Furthermore, some 34 per cent of stolen possessions surpass a value of £200, while one in ten people are hit even harder, losing up to £500 worth of items.
Chris Price, head of Direct Line Travel Insurance, said: "For many people the summer holiday is their largest annual purchase, but it can be ruined by the theft of comparatively small sums or items.
"We would advise all holidaymakers to protect themselves by taking simple, sensible precautions and by making sure they are insured against any loses in case the worst happens."
