10 May 2006  Travel insurance could ease bereavements abroad
The possibility of a friend or loved one being involved in a fatal accident while on holiday is a though that few people ever wish to entertain, but it is an occurrence that should be considered, according to a recent study.

Some 60 million trips are made by British tourists, every year and 2,000 deaths occur, according to consumer magazine Holiday Which?

The magazine's report states that the grief of someone dying abroad could be partially relieved by taking out adequate travel cover.

Possible costs such as increased accommodation expenses and having to pay for repatriation can run into thousands of pounds, according to the consumer publication, and if repatriation is not covered, some insurance providers will pay for the services of a foreign funeral director.

British travellers who encounter the experience of having to make arrangements following the death of a friend or loved one are also advised to only sign documents they fully understand.

Travel protection cover is one of the most reliable ways of covering oneself against unwanted problems should a tragedy occur and other advice from Holiday Which? includes visiting the nearest British Embassy to seek advice.

Of the 2,000 deaths that occur involving Brits abroad every year, around a third occur through natural causes and the remaining incidents are due to accidents and acts of crime.
