09 November 2005 Travel insurance necessary as onus is placed on individual
Travel insurance is becoming increasingly important as more emphasis is being placed on the individual and their prerogative to decide where to travel in the wake of terrorist attacks.
The Australian government's decision to place the onus on individual travellers to decide where and when to travel highlights the increasing need for travellers to be aware of world issues and practicalities such as back up plans in the event of an emergency.
With this growing responsibility, the need for travel insurance and destination knowledge has become increasingly important.
Commenting on the Australian government's change in stance, foreign affairs minister Alexander Downer said: "This [change] is not because our assessment of the level of risk has changed - that is something we keep under constant review - but to make it clearer that the decision to travel is theirs."
With terrorist attacks since September 11th increasing, for example the numerous bombing attacks on Bali, travellers must be alive to the facts that travel plans and the safety of a destination should not be taken as set in stone.
