20 July 2007 Travel insurance 'still important' for domestic breaks
It has been predicted that the popularity of UK-based holidays is to rocket over the next 20 years and holidaymakers have been advised to make sure they take out travel insurance even when on a domestic break.
A report from the Future Foundation in conjunction with Direct Line predicts that Britons will take 129 million more domestic breaks each by 2027, up from the current figure of 108 million.
Factors influencing holidaymakers include increased faith in the British weather - despite the current rain - and an increasing desire to learn more about their home country.
Chris Price, business manager at Direct Line Travel Insurance, said: "No matter how familiar the surroundings, it is important to remember to take out travel insurance to protect yourself should things go wrong."
He added that while the increasing number of Britons holidaying at home would be a positive step, it is vital that travel insurance is purchased to cover lost belongings or trip cancellation.
In 2004, Saga reported that the city and short holiday market accounts for 63 per cent of domestic breaks and warned against neglecting to purchase cover for these trips.
