10 February 2006 Travel insurance warning for winter sports enthusiasts
With many snow sports enthusiasts inspired to take to the slopes after the Winter Olympics, insurers have warned that adequate insurance cover is a vital consideration before people leave for their holidays.
Despite more than a million Brits going on a skiing holiday each year, just one in ten of this number is covered by travel insurance, according to American Express Travel Insurance (AETI).
"We all love the thrills and spills of winter sports. It's easy to get carried away and pick up incredible speeds on the slopes without considering the consequences," commented Joanne Field, marketing manager of AETI.
"Such risks are all the more worrying if people leave home without comprehensive winter sports cover."
The insurer added that skiers and snowboarders must be aware that the new European Health Insurance Card is not a substitute for covering you in an emergency.
With costs totalling up to £10,000 for accidents that require the injured person to be airlifted and repatriated to the UK, people could be putting themselves at serious financial risk by not taking out adequate cover before they leave.
