13 May 2006 Travel is top luxury spend for Brits
People in Britain are spending around a trillion pounds each year on purchases, which includes holidays and trips abroad, according to new research from the market-analyst group, Mintel.
Figures show that a total of £47.5 billion was spent on holidays and travel cover, which works out to at £790 for every individual in the UK.
The survey revealed that holidays are the luxury item on which people in the UK spend the most money, just behind the amount spent on mortgages, home improvements, food and bills.
Paul Rickard, director of research at Mintel said: "Despite a series of devastating natural disasters and terrorism attacks in key holiday destinations since the start of the millennium, the British have proved to be a resilient lot and are now travelling abroad more than ever before."
Mr Rickard also commented that it is now increasingly common for families to take several holidays a year with the trend moving towards more frequent, shorter breaks.
