22 February 2006 Travel warning issued for California
Travellers intending to visit California have been warned that flooding is a 'disaster waiting to happen' in some areas of the state.
Experts have claimed that Sacramento and St Louis could be the next cities to suffer damage as they both have rivers that are prone to flooding and levees are insufficient to protect those living in nearby areas.
The warnings come amid government attempts to learn from the floods which hit New Orleans in the US last year following the powerful Hurricane Katrina.
Residents and the thousands of tourists who visited New Orlenas last summer were caught unprepared for the devastation which ensued after the levees broke.
Tourists hoping to travel to the region this year have been advised to keep abreast of the weather forecast, as for those without cover natural disasters could end up costing thousands of pounds in extra accommodation and alternative travel plans.
Scientists from the American Association for the Advancement of Science are, however, hoping to prepare defence mechanisms so that storms in the coming year are not able to destroy areas to the extent that the record breaking hurricane season of 2005 did.
