04 August 2006 Travellers choosing cash
Holidaymakers could be putting themselves at risk of financial loss while travelling abroad, a recent report suggests.
The poll, conducted by American Express, found that over a third of travellers take more than £250 in hard currency with them for a week's holiday, while nearly one in ten take that amount of cash for a weekend break.
However, travellers need to bear in mind that the majority of UK travel protection policies will only cover loss and theft of cash up to £250.
Marketing manager, American Express insurance services, Joanne Field, said: "The survey results have been very illuminating about our behaviour and attitudes to going on holiday.
"Few people would carry such large sums of cash with them in the UK, so it is surprising so many risk their cash when they travel abroad."
The survey also revealed that 40 per cent of holidaymakers going away for a fortnight take more than £500 in currency and 15 per cent will take over £1,000 in cash.
