12 July 2006 Travellers lulled into false sense of security
False conceptions and ignorance could be leading many holidaymakers into physical and financial dire straits this summer.
According to online company Swiftcover.com there are five misconceptions about travel cover which are frequently used as excuses not to buy, but which can lead holiday makers in trouble.
More than a fifth of people believe they don't need to take out a travel insurance policy as they are already covered, either through home insurance polices or bank accounts, while 13 per cent think that the European Health Information Card (EHIC) provides sufficient cover.
More than 6.6 million people consider insurance too expensive while nearly 20 per cent have the "it'll never happen to me" attitude.
Claims director at swiftcover.com, Robin Reames, commented: "British holidaymakers should think twice before travelling without adequate insurance.
"The facts speak for themselves and shouldn’t be ignored. Travel insurance can be purchased quickly and with ease online."
Travellers are warned to remember that the EHIC only covers basic medical treatment and that repatriation costs in case of an emergency, uninsured, can cost thousands of pounds.
