02 May 2007 Travellers 'should be aware of malaria symptoms'
British travellers have been advised to make sure they are aware of the symptoms of malaria when heading to exotic countries, while it is reported that 57 per cent of cases of the disease in the UK are as a result of visits to the tropics.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) notes that British travellers suffered from 1,758 cases of malaria last year, with eight people dying as a result of the illness.
Holidaymakers are advised to follow medical advice to prevent contraction of the disease, including the use of insect repellent, bed nets, and complete protective drug regimens.
Professor Peter Chiodini, malaria expert at the HPA, said: "It is important for travellers to be aware of the symptoms of malaria, which can be very similar to those of 'flu."
He added that the late diagnosis of malaria can result in a more severe case of the condition and advised informing physicians of recent holidays if feeling unwell.
In September 2006, Churchill reported that malaria has resurfaced in parts of Spain, while climate change could make the country habitable for mosquitoes carrying the disease.
