30 May 2007 Travellers 'should disclose medical conditions'
British travellers have been advised to disclose details of any previous medical conditions to their travel insurance provider to ensure they are adequately covered when they travel.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) reports that while many firms will focus their insurance products on the average traveller, it is possible - with a little effort - to find sufficient and competitive protection even if affected by a long-term medical condition.
Steve Foulsham, technical services officer at Biba, said: "When you apply for travel insurance you should make clear any previous medical conditions - including cancer - and on the strength of that insurers then decide on what terms they can provide cover for those conditions."
He added that travellers in this position may be forced to purchase specialist cover to ensure they are financially protected when abroad.
Last week, HSBC warned that a quarter of holidaymakers are not fully aware of the extent of their single trip or annual travel insurance policy, with the firm urging disclosure of pre-existing medical conditions to insurers when purchasing cover.
