15 June 2007 Travellers 'should take care to avoid fraud abroad'
Britons heading overseas this summer have been advised to take care when using their plastic cards for transactions to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.
Payments abroad - a consumer advice guide published by Apacs, the UK payments association, and the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has given travellers advice on safely using their credit or debit card abroad.
This advice includes shielding the Pin when entering it into a terminal and checking statements carefully when returning home.
David Marshall, head of communications at Abta, said: "The advice in this guide provides holidaymakers with a variety of useful information and can help ensure that they have a safe and stress-free holiday."
He added that holidaymakers can use a range of payment options abroad, including cash, plastic cards and travellers cheques.
In October 2006, Sainsbury's Bank reported that 13 per cent of travel insurance claims it received during the year related to lost baggage, money or documents, with a further 11 per cent resulting from the theft of these items.
