18 January 2008 Travellers: take care of your passports
Holidaymakers are being advised to "value" their passports when travelling overseas and when in the UK.
According to Essential Travel, there has been increase in the number of passports being lost and stolen in the UK in the last decade.
Essential travel claims that in 1999, 62,364 passports were lost and stolen in the UK however this total increased year on year to 290,996 by 2006.
"Any passport holder should note down the number and issue date of their passport and keep those details in a safe place. Taking another form of photo ID is also advisable," commented Essential Travel's Stuart Bensusan.
The spokesperson added: "Selling on passport details to the black market can be a lucrative business."
An increasing number of people are choosing to apply for a new or renewed passport online, according to the Identity and Passport Service (IPS).
