05 May 2006 Travellers to guard against hurricanes
American insurance company, Access America are warning travellers heading to countries in the Atlantic basin to ensure their travel cover provides suitable cover against hurricanes.
The hurricane season in the southern USA, Mexico and the Caribbean officially begins on June 1st and Access America suggests holidaymakers cover themselves against all eventualities by taking out comprehensive travel rotection whenever they travel to the region.
Beth Godlin, executive vice-president of Access America said: "In the past two years, we have processed more than $2 million in travel claims directly related to hurricanes.
"Comprehensive travelinsurance policies can protect your vacation investment, but like all types of insurance, you must buy it before the event is foreseeable."
Access America suggests checking policies for coverage such as missed days or delays, due to stopped flights or cruise services, because of natural events such as hurricanes.
To help travellers plan, the company have put a Hurricane Season Countdown on their website.
According to Reuters, forecasters are predicting another rough hurricane season for the Caribbean and Central American countries which last year suffered 28 tropical storms, 15 of which turned to hurricanes.
