21 December 2006 Travellers urged to check region before travel
Travellers heading to regions where there is a potential risk of malaria should check up the information on their selected destination, a travel company has advised.
Columbus Direct has informed holidaymakers heading to exotic locations that it is important to plan ahead for their trip and find out as much information as possible.
Paul Dittmer, a spokesperson for Columbus Direct, said: "Certainly read all the literature available to you and, more than that, focus on the region you are going to."
He explained with examples that some parts of Chad carry a greater risk than others and that while Bali is safer for travellers with regards to tropical diseases, Indonesia is not safe.
Last year, Norwich Union advised holidaymakers to cover up their arms and legs and use insect repellent to protect themselves against the risk of malaria, which can be potentially fatal.
