10 June 2005 Travellers urged to take out insurance ahead of US hurricane season
Travellers are being urged to take out travel insurance ahead of the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1st.
Travel insurance provider Access America is calling on travellers to purchase travel policies before dangerous storms are forecast and become "foreseeable events".
In 2004, the Atlantic hurricane season was especially devastating, with multiple storms hitting the Caribbean and Florida, costing Richmond-based Access America $1 million in claims.
Most affected customers filed claims for trip cancellation, trip interruption and travel delay, with almost half of the hurricane-related claims associated with losses incurred during Hurricane Frances.
Beth Godlin, senior vice president of travel markets at Access America, said: " Beach vacations and cruises are often affected by hurricanes and tropical storms this time of year. Even destinations a few hundred miles inland can sustain impact for several days when a storm comes ashore.
"Comprehensive travel insurance policies can protect your family vacation investment, but like all types of insurance, you must buy it before the storm is a sure thing."
The official Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1st and continues through to November 30th.
